27th July 2012

It’s been pretty busy here with Reef Check and Marine Resource Management courses.  So we’ve both been teaching :-D

I unfortunately developed a lovely infection on the side of my calf,  maybe a mozzie bite or ingrown hair, I just don’t know.  I left it for a few days, keeping it clean, resisting the temptation to pick it but it was just getting worse.  So I went to the clinic with Si.

After seeing the Dr, the nurse cleaned, scraped all the puss, dead tissue away, leaving me with what looked like a gunshot wound.  They then filled the hole with a strip of bandage soaked in betadine and bandaged everything up.  Ouch,  definitely NOT something I’d like to experience again.

Prescribed with strong antibiotics and told to stay dry, I hobbled off.   I was pretty wary of taking them after my last allergic reaction and especially with Simon being on the afternoon boat  ..but everything was ok

..so that’s me out of the water for few more days, which means poor ole Simon has to juggle his course to squeeze in some dives with my student, Tania.   So, I’ve only been able to do the academics side of things , have actually got around to a blog, rewriting all of the ECO slates which have faded over multiple washes, made new plumb lines and various other bits and bob.

This morning I cleaned around the house including the fans, which were covered in dust, took the washing down, emptied the bins then cycled down into Sairee to meet a friend for brunch at  ‘Through the looking glass’ ..which is a tiny bakery which do the best homemade pies, sandwiches and cakes on the island.   After spending a good hr 1/2 there, I pottered about on the bike for half an hour, I did have every intention to go exploring but as it was so hot I ventured home for a nice cold shower   ..how lazy am I?!

Tomorrow is the monthly Beach & Dive Site Clean Up!   Hopefully they’ll be a big turn out!!

22nd July 2012

So... lets recap...

The last post was when I was quite annoyed... What happened you ask?

Well... its complicated but... in simple terms... I paid £100 out of our very tight eco budget, to send a boat to collect fishing nets... They returned with not much net, and a camera full of fun diving photos.. I was a little angry and ended up have a shouting match in a bar with another instructor.... Anyway... its settled now...

So, onto better news.. Jenny and I have been conducting a Reef Check with 2 students (Nick & Katie).. and also attending a Mooring Buoy Workshop.

The course went so well that we actually managed to conduct a full Reef Check Survey on the last day (the 1st one we've completed in a couple of months)..

Next stop, after a day off (not really a day... gotta catch up with so much stuff) is another Reef Check that Jen will conduct with a 16 year old from Hong Kong while I start a Marine Resource Management course with Katie...

16th July 2012

Today, I am in the mood for a massive rant.... BUT... I think I am going to take a few days to reflect... and gain some perspective in the cold light of day.

Besides a bout of sickness, I have been conducting an Open Water course with a couple of Dutch guys... who are good fun... and easy to teach..

More info... when I have time to calm down...

Same same...

I spent most of the last few days working, while Jen completed an Advanced Course... However, today, Jen and I took the afternoon to have a fun dive together... Just the two of us..

She took her video camera, and I took a stills camera..  We bumped into a Cuttlefish... pretty rare on Koh Tao, but the last 3 times I have been to Mango Bay I keep seeing the little fella!

After the Cuttlefish, we swam over to where a boat had anchored a couple of days ago, to assess the damage.. it was pretty extensive...

We turned the big boulder coral, to help it survive...

Then, it was over to the big school of Fusiliers.... you have to love these guys... nearly always hanging around!

And still the work continues.

While Jen teaches during one of the busiest periods... I sit on my laptop.... very boring and depressing but needs to be done!

I did take a bit of time out, to put a couple of new Eco posters up, to try and make the place look a little brighter.... Jen, Carsten, Johannes and me did a little painting too...

5th July 2012

Again, its been a while... We are just hitting busy season, and including the mountain of UK work... I have had no time to do much besides work... (photos of me at the computer would not be very interesting!)

With the full moon rush arriving today... it'll be all hands to the deck, so I could be working a lot of hours...

The only thing, that I have really done besides UK work, was to take Tim to the Bangkok Samui hospital, which involved the ferry, hospital, a night's stay over at some friends... then back in the morning. Tim had a CT scan as his balance is still messed up from the bike accident.. The scan revealed no damage, to the relief of everyone.. He just needs to relax for a couple of weeks and recuperate.

What else...?  mmmm..

Not much really... Sorry to be boring... I must get some piccies in the next few days of anything just to make this blog a little more interesting..!
